Swastika barbecue logo

swastika barbecue

By now everyone knows that the swastika, before being co-opted by the Nazis, was an ancient symbol that transcended cultures and meaning. Still, it's always odd when you see one used in a commercial setting. I took this shot at an Asian market last week. It's apparently a Chinese made barbecue sauce made for the english market. I guess there wasn't enough money in the budget to do a little market research.

New York Times Art Director Steven Heller published a book about the swastika a few years back in which he give a history of the symbol and ultimately asks, can this symbol be redeemed?  I wonder, that as the world becomes smaller, and our communities become more diverse, the original meanings of the symbol will be restored.
